Removing Cake Covering

Ask Mel

Just a simple question about cakes in general. Are you supposed to remove the paper top exposing the tubes or leave it intact? I have seen it being done both ways and there is no instruction on most products. Although there was one time I witnessed a mishap with a tube finale. The plastic caps were not removed and the breaks happened about ten feet off the ground. Not a pleasurable experience. I would appreciate any information you could give me on this vague subject.

Hello Ducky,

That is a great question and one that is important to your show!

I have seen it done both ways. If there is a plastic cover on the top, then you absolutely need to remove it. If it has a paper covering it will not affect the propulsion of the mortar, but it sure does leave a big mess in the back yard or around the lake! That is why we always remove the tops, whether it be plastic or paper!

Thanks for your question and happy shooting!
