Are M80's Legal?

Ask Mel

Question:

Dear Mel,

I have a friend who says he can get M-80's and cherry bombs from a guy he knows. How come you guys don't have them?

Answer:

Hello Chip,

Another great question from our fans! This is a question we get all of the time. It seems like there is always a guy who knows a guy who has M80's, cherry bombs or quarter sticks just sitting around in his garage and he is just waiting to blow something up. The issue with this is the fact that they are all illegal explosives and have been since the 60's and 70's.

There are very good reasons for this. I have met many people who have used them in the past. I have also heard the stories from these people about mishaps and blunders. Often times they hold up a hand that is missing one or two digits because of said mishaps. Not good!

According to our Fireworks Dictionary, the original M80 was a military simulator that was sold as a firecracker. M80s are red in color, one and one-half inches long, 5/8 of an inch in diameter, with a green waterproof fuse sticking out the side. It contained two grams of flash powder and was responsible for hundreds of serious injuries due to its powerful blast. These items were banned by the CPSC in 1966, and made illegal for consumer sale, use or possession by the BATF.

So there you have it Chip! The answer to your question is that Mess's doesn't carry any illegal fireworks. All of the fireworks in our showroom are classified as consumer grade 1.4G and completely legal in the United States. This doesn't mean that they won't be big or fun! Consumer fireworks are plenty big, loud and amazingly fun! Just go to our website to check out all of the videos to see for yourself!

Keep It Kickin' Chip,

Mel
